Stalin Gold Frank Merlin Novel Mark Ellis 9781783062478 Books

Mark Ellis' "Stalin's Gold" is so-so. Pluses and minuses. The story is about a huge shipment of gold sent to the Russians during the Spanish Civil War in exchange for arms. A portion, about $6 million, is diverted by Polish officers to support the resistance effort. Eventually the gold winds up in London during the Blitz and everyone - Brits, Poles, Russians - is searching for it. My biggest complaint about this novel is that it is not well paced, so much of the action, and way too much of the explanation of what has been going on is saved for the final pages. Protagonist DCI Frank Merlin is too cardboard, as are most of the huge cast of characters (keep a scorecard. I did think that the vivid descriptions of the nightly bombings and aftermath were very well done. But it didn't save the book for me. Though I've now read the first two books in the series, I won't be continuing on.

Stalin Gold Frank Merlin Novel Mark Ellis 9781783062478 Books Reviews

Excellent all the way. More complex and demanding than the first in the series, partially due to multiple time frames and locations. Characters remain interesting and, again, the presentation of London during the Blitz is informative and effective. Painless history.
Very interesting read as it is set during the blitz in London and is a period of events that I have never seen much info on. If the author is to believed there was a great deal of theft and robbery during this time period, which makes for good police novel reading.
There are a LOT of characters in this book.....and the story line jumps from one to the next to the next. If you do not pay strict attention, then you may not like the book. Interesting story line....I might have liked it better of I had known the story of the gold earlier in the book....as it was, it all took a long time to unfold.
I read this book several weeks ago but found it very interesting. I didn't realize the U.S. was an active participant during the Stalin era. I found it interesting and kept me wanting to read more in order to see what was coming. I loo forward to reading more from Frank Merlin.
I was slightly disappointed after a strong debut in this series. The characters are well developed, and I liked the way the main characters fleshed out. However, it took awhile for the plot to really get rolling. The book ends strongly, but unlike the debut novel, this one was a bit of a slog early on. I am sure the author will bounce back if he cares to. His debut was quite strong.
This is a good mystery solved by good detective work. It is another story about the lost Polish gold, this time starring Stalin, Beria and various Polish patriots, con men and criminals. Frank Merlin is a good English detective and triumphs as we knew he would. The setting of the early days of World war II and particularly the Battle of Brittain adds spice to a simple story and the "stiff upper lips" of the English. Although all the bad guys are all conveniently done away with at the end (except of course Stalin and Beria) and some by accident of war, the book is a good way to pass the time time on a long flight or train ride.
This is the second in the Frank Merlin series. The characters have been introduced in Princes Gate, but this stands on its own. Ellis has taken a number of real historical events - the transfer of Spain's gold reserves to the USSR in the waning days of the Spanish Civil War; the Battle of Britain a few years later and the activities Polish expat community in London after the fall of Poland - and woven together an fast-paced mystery. Maybe a little of that Spanish gold was stolen; maybe it ended up in London; maybe Stalin and Beria learned of this; maybe a few other unsavory characters did to. And so everyone chases the gold - in between German air raids.
