This is the eighth book in the Whiskey Creek Series - my favorite series by Brenda Novak. I received an arc of this novel. I have read all the Whiskey Creek books and enjoyed them all, but this was BY FAR my FAVORITE of them all.

Something about forbidden love, redemption, and happily ever afters really speaks to me. I couldn't put this one down = read it in one sitting (much to my husband's discomfort, I had my kindle under the covers with me.)

I had been waiting for Riley's story and wasn't sure how he would have his happily ever after. The girl he fell for in high school was from the wrong side of town, with a single mother who was a hoarder. But Phoenix was different and that had appealed to Riley.

Things went bad when Phoenix was charged with murder and carrying Riley's son. Phoenix's life was changed forever when she was wrongly convicted of killing the girl Riley had been dating. She never stood a chance as a poor girl, no friends to support her, and a town who turned against her. She gave birth in prison while serving seventeen years for a murder she claimed to be innocent of.

Riley worked hard and with the help of his parents, raised Jake to be a great young man who was popular and a pitcher on the high school baseball team. He helped his father at his construction company and they lived comfortably.

Having served her sentence, Phoenix wished to establish a relationship with her son. The town was not welcoming her back and instead hoped to make her life as miserable as possible. The family of the dead girl work to drive her out of town.

Persistence paid off and Phoenix, Riley and Jake find a way to get to know each other better. I won't spoil the ups and downs that they face, suffice it to say it was quite a ride with an ending leaving you feeling happy to read. Can't wait for #9 in the series. If you haven't read the others in the series I encourage you to give them all a try. Brenda Novak isn't afraid to write about difficult issues that gives her characters hope and happy endings. Novak is definitely one of my go-to authors.

This Heart of Mine Whiskey Creek Brenda Novak 9780778316725 Books Reviews

4.5-5 stars. The blurb is what drew me to this book, I couldn't help but be intrigued by a heroine who had so much against her, but would take whatever chances necessary to be there for her son. She was unable to be a mother before, but she refused to let what little opportunity remained slip past her. I haven't read any of the other books in this series, and didn't find that to be a problem when focusing on Phoenix and Riley's storyline. I was definitely in awe of Phoenix. She's not any different from the average woman in certain ways, but she's also extraordinary in other ways. After a 16 year sentence in prison for a crime she didn't commit, she's experienced what life is like when no one is on her side so Phoenix can only advocate for herself. She ought to be hardened, bitter, resentful and angry, but she was none of those qualities. She was a mother reaching out to her son and taking whatever measures were necessary to make that happen, including reassuring her son's father of any reservations he might have about her. I couldn't help but empathize with her and root for her.

I expected not to like Riley, or warm up to him slowly and begrudgingly, but he wasn't as unlikable as I imagined. He's been a good father to Jacob. There's several great scenes between Jacob with either one of his parents, which really speaks to what kind of character Jacob is and what his father is truly like. As Riley puzzles over as to whether or not Phoenix is actually guilty of the crime she was charged for, he witnesses her real personality firsthand. Nothing about her screams "murderer," but then again, Phoneix is a different person now. I loved how Kyle (Riley's best friend) was so accepting of Phoenix and insisted on becoming her friend.

The story kept me glued to the pages, seeing Phoenix restart her life with so many obstacles as Riley quietly observed and began to infiltrate himself back into her life, initially out of necessity, but later out of care and concern that continues to grow deeper. Phoenix may be independent and resilient, but she doesn't trust easily and cannot open her heart to Riley again because it punished her severely the first time. Phoenix has no desire to repeat her mistakes. I definitely wanted to see more for Phoenix in terms of her reputation being redeemed and how the people who scorned her so harshly before would treat her once they knew the truth. But at the same time, I enjoyed the re-establishment of her and Riley together, as well as Jacob, in their second chance together. It's definitely an emotional, touching read.
