I have been researching my family tree for years and have traced my father's side to the first setters, a devout family that was persecuted by English law, one John Rogers a martyr for his faithful work in helping William Tyndale write and print the bible in English. It was his grandsons, the Stone brothers who left England. This band of brothers, carried their spiritual heritage to America. Two settled in Watertown, Massachusetts and arrived in 1629, two younger brothers arrived in 1639 to settle Guilford,Connecticut, and another settled Hartford, Connecticut, there is a statue of him in Hartford and in England as well. This book took me in a journey with those ancients who paved the way for me and my brood, and this book brought the struggles they endured to light. My grandfather carried on their faith, all the generations, he was a minister in a long line of ministers dating to the start of our beloved country.

The Puritans American Family Portraits #1 Jack Cavanaugh 9781589190658 Books Reviews

I'm on page 200-something and still not really that into the book. I keep reading because I'm interested in the topic (my ancestors were Puritans), but I thought Cavanaugh's book "Glimpses of Truth" was better. I would say if this period of history interests you it's worth reading; otherwise you might have a hard time getting through it.
The five stars are for the superb edige-of-the-seat writing. I could not put the book down. Two a.m. in the morn seem to come too soon. I would recommend this book to all my Librarian friends.
I enjoy the way Jack Cavanaugh brings history to life through fiction. This book was just as good, if not better, the second time.
Jack Cavanaugh - one of my favorite historical fiction authors! Where are you - please write more books! A man’s, man and writer, but enthralling for female readers as well. All characters are researched, believably real and often he adds information on the actual events at the end of his books. The was a great series that spanning major parts of history and all linked by family.
This book was an enjoyable read. Christian history is a fascinating arena. The fiction part of the book was well played and full of adventure.
This book was super good it had history, action, mystery and romance i love this book when I read it if felt as if I was in the book having the same adventures as Andrew Morgan did. And it was really exciting. When I finished reading a chapter i would be like "what's going to happen next " so I kept reading. Really good book. I would definitely read again even though I have already read it.😊
I've read a number of Jack Cavanaugh's books, but this one is special. Cavanaugh writes about Drew Morgan, a young man hired by Bishop Laud in 1629 England to spy on the Puritans. But Drew is unexpectedly touched by the spiritual curate Christopher Mathews, and he is drawn to his daughters as well. He admires Nell for her spirituality and her intelligence, and Jenny for her vivaciousness and her love of life.

But loyalties to Bishop Laud have to come first. This creates problems and tensions. The last portion of the book takes place in the American Colonies. be prepared for a breathtaking, powerful conclusion.

This is Cavanaugh's first book and so far, by a narrow margin, I would have to say that it is his best.
